Mumbai home: This 1,000-square-foot abode sports a clever integration of red, green, and blue

Each room in this 1,000-square-foot Mumbai home is enveloped in a distinct colour, creating a vibrant yet cohesive design narrative. Striking bold colours in the private rooms and subtle tones in the public areas define the RGB House—short for the ‘Red Green Blue’ House. Designed by Pratha Bhagat and Harsh Soneji of Studio MAT for a chartered accountant who is both an art and travel enthusiast, the home seamlessly blends comfort with style. “The client had two key priorities: a distinctive home and a welcoming ambience for hosting friends and family,” say the designers. These priorities became the cornerstone of their vision for this contemporary abode.

The entrance foyer sets the tone for the living and dining areas, exuding a serene, monolithic charm in warm beige hues. This space features a bespoke bench set against a backdrop of beige lime plaster, offering a subtle preview of the home’s cohesive aesthetic. The foyer transitions into expansive living and dining rooms, beautifully illuminated by abundant natural light. A narrow layout in the living room inspired the creation of built-in sofas, seamlessly integrated into the lime-plastered walls. These sofas not only enhance the sense of unity but also include a thoughtfully designed niche for a braided Pachira plant, adding a touch of natural elegance.

Across the room, the dining area echoes the overarching theme with a table and chairs upholstered in beige, harmonising effortlessly with the surroundings. Abstract art engravings adorn the walls, lending depth and visual interest to the space. Two elegant archways connect the living area to the bedrooms, with a striking Pichhwai artwork commanding attention at the heart of the passage. This carefully curated detail anchors the transition, adding a layer of cultural richness to the home’s understated yet sophisticated design.

The parents’ bedroom exudes a warm and inviting ambience with its red terracotta theme. The rich, earthy lime-plastered walls by Limocoat lend a natural warmth to the space, serving as the perfect backdrop for custom-made wooden furniture. However, the designers faced the unique challenge of custom-formulating lime plaster colours for each room and perfectly matching them to the PU finish on the furniture—a meticulous effort that ultimately resulted in a harmonious and cohesive design.

At the heart of the space stands an elaborate bookcase, commanding attention as the room’s centrepiece. Thoughtfully selected furnishings from Pride and Sarita Handa seamlessly integrate throughout the house, further elevating the cohesive theme.
