Recently, we came across an exciting concept called the color of the year. Did you guys know about this? If not, hop on as we explore this weirdly interesting topic – Pantone Color of the Year.

Pantone Color Institute – The Tudakam

Founded in 1985, the Pantone Color Institute educates, inspires, and promotes fluency in the language of color. Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman, who helped to start the Pantone Color Institute, has a background in colour, design and psychology. The ongoing colour preference study research she conducts through the Pantone Color Institute serves as the foundation.

So, one fine summer in 1999, the color research institute of Pantone decided to start an educational program called the Pantone Color of the Year.

The idea was to bring in a discussion on colours globally that has some cultural significance. Language of colour was the main motive behind this entire concept. What is going on in our world? Is it hot chaos or just pure and blissful peace? How can this be depicted through colour? Such thoughts were the driving reasons for the Pantone institute.

Who chooses Pantone Color of the Year?

There is a fine panel of colour experts researching various colours and emerging trends. They consider many fields like beauty, fashion, entertainment, medical science (yeah, you heard it right!), social media, travel, tourism and other fields. And they also look into patterns, textures or materials as their reference.

After a deep dive into the world of hues, they come up with a list of colours that can influence the decision of Pantone.

The Process

  • How does the picking procedure work?
  • How does Pantone agree on the Color of the Year every year?

Many think that their decision is made in haste by some bunch of colour enthusiasts. But the truth is that their brilliant team comprises Pantone Color Institute team members who work day and night in their colour studios, performing research and analysis on colour and their brand associations. They take colour classes, almost all of them on colour analysis and design-related decisions. In short, this is a prolonged and gradual process of choosing a colour of particular relevance when various fields are considered.

The team is diverse. Their perceptions and ideologies towards colours differ in many aspects. So this helps them get a vibrant outlook. Despite the geographical distance between the team members, there is always a point of intersection when meetings are held. All the different approaches are compared and analyzed to reach a meaningful conclusion. Pantone Color of the year denotes global culture, and colour psychology is also an essential factor behind this.

What does the selection of the Pantone Color of the Year indicate?

It reflects and resonates with the mood of the world. In colour language, this tells us the current trend in the world. It is part of the bigger picture. Global lifestyle trends are what these colours show us.

Viva Magenta 18-1750

Inspired by nature, Viva Magenta is all about strength and bravery. This colour denotes strength and power. Pantone describes Viva Magenta as “a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.”

This purplish-red-crimson colour, lying between red and blue on the colour wheel, is extra peculiar as it is not found on the visible spectrum of light, and no wavelength of light corresponds to that colour. Instead, it is physiologically and psychologically perceived as a mixture of red and blue.

Viva Magenta is the colour of universal harmony and emotional balance. It contains the passion, power and energy of red, restrained by the introspection and quiet energy of violet. It promotes compassion, kindness and cooperation. The colour magenta is a colour of cheerfulness, happiness, contentment and appreciation.
