A Colorful 0K Storybook Home in Minnesota Is Adorable and Affordable

Built in 1940, the vibrant home has had only two owners. This means it hasn’t been subjected to “Frankenhouse” remodels, which could have robbed it of its charm.

“It’s made of all cinderblock, and it’s pretty intact from the original design, with the exception of updated kitchen appliances and mechanicals,” explains listing agent Dolly Langer, with Edina Realty.

On the market for $250,000, the house is loaded with unique decor, some of which dates to the original owners, who had the place until 2019.

“The current owner really left the second floor alone. There’s some pretty incredible wallpaper up there, and there’s a circus-themed half-bath,” Langer says. “He loves color, and on the main level, he really let the house inspire the color palette. I think that’s one thing that makes it so unique and is drawing so much attention.”

Speaking of attention, the charming home wound up third among our most popular homes last week.

Why so many clicks on this cute abode? Think pink. Blush is the dominant color in much of the 2,147-square-foot house.

“The kitchen had hues of pink in it already. He just kind of ran with it and made the cupboards all pink,” Langer explains. “In the living room, there’s a built-in bench, and the upholstery there is like a lighter red. He took the color of those lighter circles and painted the walls.”

Upstairs, the carpet is new. A green shag was swapped out in favor of another type of green carpet.

One of the home’s three bedrooms comes with a creative wall design.

“A bedroom has a Texas flag. He’s from Texas, so he did that to pay homage to his home state,” the agent says.

Many of the rooms feature built-ins, including the circular dining area on the main level.

“There’s a built-in bench in the living room and a wonderful built-in desk upstairs in the sitting area with really cool curves and drawers,” she says.

It sits across the street from the Mississippi River. Just over the river is the city’s downtown area.

“There are a lot of really interesting houses on Riverside Drive, and this is one of them,” Langer says, adding that she was also part of the home’s previous sale. She’s on board with the colorful additions made by the current owner.

“I have been in touch with him through the last three years, so he was sending me pictures. When he painted it the light turquoise, he was sending me pictures of what the color scheme was going to be. I thought it was perfect. It needed a new coat of paint—and what a way to really make it a landmark by painting it that great turquoise color.”

The owner, who is relocating out of state, is relishing all of the attention this house is getting, Langer says.

“It’s bittersweet for him,” she continues. “He loves this house a lot, and it has been a hard thing to leave, so I think it has been nice for it to get the kind of attention the house deserves.”
